0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 11:37 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Thursday, 22 February 2007 Live in the present and you'll be happy As a little boy, I enjoyed chanting the Cantonese words that wished the listener prosperity and urged for hongbao. Getting those little red packets with money made me happy. The more money I found inside each paper packet, the happier I was. Then, as I grew older, I started to wonder why there were more gong xi fa cai (Mandarin for wishing you prosperity) wishes than xin nian kuai le (happy new year) greetings during Chinese New Year. My non-Chinese pals would tease me: 'Because you Chinese are money-faced, that's why. Happiness is more important than money.' It was in jest, of course. Many ethnic Chinese I know agree that happiness is more important than money and still subscribe to that sentiment. But last month, I heard a woman philanthropist on local radio disagreeing with her fellow panelists and saying that money was more important than health and happiness. She explained that it did not mean one had to chase wealth, but that we all needed enough money to sustain health and do things that made us happy. What a wise point of view. In quizzes about personal values, people tend to pick health and happiness ahead of money. I used to put health and fitness at the top of my list. Now I am reconsidering and leaning towards the view that having enough money to live healthily and comfortably should be No 1. Last week, I picked up the latest Mind issue of the magazine, Scientific American. On the cover is the teaser, 'Why it's so hard to be happy'. Inside is an article by associate professor of psychology Michael Wiederman. He writes: 'What would make you happier? Perhaps a bigger house or a better car; a sexier or more understanding mate; surely, wealth and fame. Or maybe you would simply be happy with finishing everything on your to-do list.' Then the writer urges readers to stop deluding themselves because research suggests that those things are not likely to increase your happiness significantly. Neither can hard work nor good luck bring you happiness, and winning a lottery apparently gives only a transient high. 'The happiest people seem to be those who are engaged in the present, rather than focused on future goals,' says the writer. When a person is totally absorbed in something interesting or motivating, he or she is said to be going with the flow. Following this notion, the writer says, Western psychology has embraced the Eastern concept of mindfulness. The concept calls for immersion in what is happening right now, without any distraction of the past or future. Whether we can be happy or have a cheerful disposition is also a function of our personality. That, in turn, is the result of the different combinations of nature and nurture in different people. There are personality differences even among siblings. Complicated? Sure. Research tells us that happiness does not come easily. But most of us knew that already. So, let me wish you xin nian kuei le. Okay, lah, also, gong xi fa cai! By The New Paper columnist Peter H L Lim, 21 Feb 2007 somehow this article is so similiar to what the buddhist venerable sage said.. “活在当下才是快乐” 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 1:21 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Wednesday, 14 February 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 10:46 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Sunday, 11 February 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 10:59 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Saturday, 10 February 2007 The way I look at it, a happy spiritual marriage should have these 5 C’s - 1. Commitment : This is obvious. If each can't totally commit to the other, there's no need to talk about marriage in the first place. Why commit half-heartedly for life? Why live half a lie, while seeking the truth on the spiritual path? 2. Compassion : At times, different opinions and views might arise. Mutual compassion is needed to ensure conflicts or grudges are resolved with understanding. Both need to see that to be resentful is to hurt each other. When we are unkind, we lose our spirituality in the moment. 3. Cultivation : Right spiritual cultivation results in wisdom, with which one will do less wrong, while becoming more virtuous to each other and for the world at large. Commitment above is not just to each other, but to a common spiritual goal too. Without the latter, the marriage is a mundane union, not a spiritual one. 4. Communication : A relationship without sufficient communication is not a working relationship because the true essence of what makes a healthy living spiritual relationship live is the continual exchange of kind and wise thoughts (not bodily fluids!), which better each other. Learning and sharing the Dharma together makes any relationship spiritual, whether it is also carnal or not. 5. Choice : Commitment, as mentioned above, should not be mistaken as attachment to each other. In other words, there is always freedom of choice for each party. Freedom in the sense that though the couple might be largely agreeable on many issues, they are still free to see certain issues from their individual perspectives. If both parties are exactly alike, they might as well have married themselves or stayed single! Ultimately, choice here also refers to the generosity of being able to gladly let the other party go should one choose to renounce the relationship for a spiritual or even mundane cause. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 9:27 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Friday, 9 February 2007 another free MMORPG.. i'm still new to it and it seems quite fun for the 1st 15mins of playing.. click on the banner to join in the game! ![]() 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 11:03 am <-------------------------------------------------------> Monday, 5 February 2007 i thought diya will win.. cos her fans are alot! in the indoor stadium, you can really see more diya's fans and they're also more enthusiastic.. its like history repeating.. but who will know that daren's album sold more then diya.. i think this is part of the reason he won the superstar.. anyway, i also prefer daren to diya.. he has the x-factor of a superstar more then her.. i really don't like the way she sang her last song.. before that i already know she cannot make it.. she cant reach the pitch and her voice is not powerful enough.. i really wonder why she chosen that song.. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 12:28 am <-------------------------------------------------------> Friday, 2 February 2007

Microsoft.. because of this lawsuit, Microsoft is changing the way Internet Explorer handles ActiveX controls.. these changes will be in Internet Explorer 7.. however, to allow developers a chance to change their code.. the change was included in the April Security update (KB912812).. this is why you are receiving the following prompt when visiting some ActiveX web pages. ![]() How to Correct this Problem 1) Download the following Compatibility Patch to revert the IE Active X Control Behavior http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B7D9801B-4FB5-492E-903E -3400ABF1D731&displaylang=en 2) Install it and reboot your computer 3) Try the webpage you were receiving the prompt on This should fix the issue for the time being, however when IE 7 is released this prompt will appear on web pages that have not changed the way they handle ActiveX components. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 5:09 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> some of us may have heard of HP's LightScribe technology, HD DVD, but ever heard of Blu-ray Disc? well, its derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc.. and because of its shorter wavelength, substantially more data can be stored on a BD than on the common DVD.. the BD can stored 25GB on each side compared to DVD's 4.7GB.. there're also released of dual layer(50GB) recordable and re-writable BDs.. BD format is only around for 2-3 years and is still ongoing development.. although the Blu-ray Disc specification has been finalized, engineers continue working to advance the technology. Quad-layer (100 GB) discs have been demonstrated. And TDK announced in August 2006 that they have created a working experimental Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a single side, using six 33 GB data layers. Such discs would almost certainly not work on some of today's Blu-ray Disc players, as these devices are only designed and tested on discs that meet the current specification. a Blu-ray Disc rewriter cost more then $1k currently.. but price will definitly drop in the future.. i remembered buying my DVD-RW burner for $130+ now it cost only $40+ 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 4:24 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Thursday, 1 February 2007 Joke of The Month Biz Man And The Cabbie A successful businessman flew to Vegas for the weekend to gamble. He lost the shirt off his back, and had nothing left but a quarter and the second half of his round trip ticket -- If he could just get to the airport he could get himself home. So he went out to the front of the casino where there was a cab waiting. He got in and explained his situation to the cabbie. He promised to send the driver money from home, he offered him his credit card numbers, his drivers license number, his address, etc. but to no avail. The cabbie said (adopt appropriate dialect), "If you don't have fifteen dollars, get the hell out of my cab!" So the businessman was forced to hitch-hike to the airport and was barely in time to catch his flight. One year later the businessman, having worked long and hard to regain his financial success, returned to Vegas and this time he won big. Feeling pretty good about himself, he went out to the front of the casino to get a cab ride back to the airport. Well who should he see out there, at the end of a long line of cabs, but his old buddy who had refused to give him a ride when he was down on his luck. The businessman thought for a moment about how he could make the guy pay for his lack of charity, and he hit on a plan. The businessman got in the first cab in the line, "How much for a ride to the airport," he asked? "Fifteen bucks," came the reply. "And how much for you to give me a blowjob on the way?" "What?! Get the hell out of my cab." The businessman got into the back of each cab in the long line and asked the same questions, with the same result. When he got to his old friend at the back of the line, he got in and asked "How much for a ride to the airport?" The cabbie replied "fifteen bucks." The businessman said "ok" and off they went. Then, as the drove slowly past the long line of cabs the businessman gave a big smile and thumbs up sign to each driver. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 11:35 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> |
