![]() It's one of the golden rules of the natural world – birds live in trees, fish live in water. The trouble is, no one bothered to tell the mangrove killifish. Scientists have discovered that it spends several months of every year out of the water and living inside trees. Hidden away inside rotten branches and trunks, the remarkable creatures temporarily alter their biological makeup so they can breathe air. Biologists studying the killifish say they astonished it can cope for so long out of its natural habitat. The discovery, along with its ability to breed without a mate, must make the mangrove killifish, Rivulus marmoratus Poey, one of the oddest fish known to man. Around two inches long, they normally live in muddy pools and the flooded burrows of crabs in the mangrove swamps of Florida, Latin American and Caribbean. The latest discovery was made by biologists wading through swamps in Belize and Florida who found hundreds of killifish hiding out of the water in the rotting branches and trunks of trees. The fish had flopped their way to their new homes when their pools of water around the roots of mangroves dried up. Inside the logs, they were lined up end to end along tracks carved out by insects. Dr Scott Taylor of the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Programme in Florida admitted the creatures were a little odd. "They really don't meet standard behavioural criteria for fish," he told New Scientist magazine. Although the cracks inside logs make a perfect hiding place, conditions can be cramped. The fish – which are usually fiercely territorial – are forced to curb their aggression. Another study, published earlier this year, revealed how they alter their bodies and metabolism to cope with life out of water. Their gills are altered to retain water and nutrients, while they excrete nitrogen waste through their skin. These changes are reversed as soon as they return to the water. Previously their biggest claim to fame was that they are the only known vertebrate – animal with a backbone – to reproduce without the need for a mate. Killifish can develop both female and male sexual organs, and fertilise their eggs while they are still in the body, laying tiny embryos into the water. They are not the only fish able to breathe air. The walking catfish of South-east Asia has gills that allow it to breathe in air and in water. The climbing perch of India can suffocate in water unless it can also gulp in air. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 11:16 am <-------------------------------------------------------> Sunday, 28 October 2007 i was walking down orchard road on a weekday afternoon and then realised that most of the drivers are ladies.. and this make me wonder, the men are working hard in the office and the wives having great time shopping? haha.. driving and shopping in orchard road esp. during weekday is not cheap.. i guess they are all "Tai Tai".. oh this remind me of the DAMN ERP that increased up to $5! i wonder why they can't see it juz won't work.. maybe yes at the beginning.. we all know what's the real reason behind for raising ERP..its always like this.. The 11 Times Trick We all know the trick when multiplying by ten - add 0 to the end of the number, but did you know there is an equally easy trick for multiplying a two digit number by 11? This is it: Take the original number and imagine a space between the two digits, in this example we will use 52: 5_2 Now add the two numbers together and put them in the middle: 5_(5+2)_2 That is it - you have the answer: 572. If the numbers in the middle add up to a 2 digit number, just insert the second number and add 1 to the first: 9_(9+9)_9 (9+1)_8_9 10_8_9 1089 - It works every time. 2. Quick Square If you need to square a 2 digit number ending in 5, you can do so very easily with this trick. Mulitply the first digit by itself + 1, and put 25 on the end. That is all! 252 = (2x(2+1)) & 25 2 x 3 = 6 625 3. Multiply by 5 Most people memorize the 5 times tables very easily, but when you get in to larger numbers it gets more complex - or does it? This trick is super easy. Take any number, then divide it by 2 (in other words, halve the number). If the result is whole, add a 0 at the end. If it is not, ignore the remainder and add a 5 at the end. It works everytime: 2682 x 5 = (2682 / 2) & 5 or 0 2682 / 2 = 1341 (whole number so add 0) 13410 Let’s try another: 5887 x 5 2943.5 (fractional number (ignore remainder, add 5) 29435 4. Multiply by 9 This one is simple - to multiple any number between 1 and 9 by 9 hold both hands in front of your face - drop the finger that corresponds to the number you are multiplying (for example 9×3 - drop your third finger) - count the fingers before the dropped finger (in the case of 9×3 it is 2) then count the numbers after (in this case 7) - the answer is 27. 5. Multiply by 4 This is a very simple trick which may appear obvious to some, but to others it is not. The trick is to simply multiply by two, then multiply by two again: 58 x 4 = (58 x 2) + (58 x 2) = (116) + (116) = 232 6. Calculate a Tip If you need to leave a 15% tip, here is the easy way to do it. Work out 10% (divide the number by 10) - then add that number to half its value and you have your answer: 15% of $25 = (10% of 25) + ((10% of 25) / 2) $2.50 + $1.25 = $3.75 7. Tough Multiplication If you have a large number to multiply and one of the numbers is even, you can easily subdivide to get to the answer: 32 x 125, is the same as: 16 x 250 is the same as: 8 x 500 is the same as: 4 x 1000 = 4,000 8. Dividing by 5 Dividing a large number by five is actually very simple. All you do is multiply by 2 and move the decimal point: 195 / 5 Step1: 195 * 2 = 390 Step2: Move the decimal: 39.0 or just 39 2978 / 5 step 1: 2978 * 2 = 5956 Step 2: 595.6 9. Subtracting from 1,000 To subtract a large number from 1,000 you can use this basic rule: subtract all but the last number from 9, then subtract the last number from 10: 1000 -648 step1: subtract 6 from 9 = 3 step2: subtract 4 from 9 = 5 step3: subtract 8 from 10 = 2 answer: 352 10. Assorted Multiplication Rules Multiply by 5: Multiply by 10 and divide by 2. Multiply by 6: Sometimes multiplying by 3 and then 2 is easy. Multiply by 9: Multiply by 10 and subtract the original number. Multiply by 12: Multiply by 10 and add twice the original number. Multiply by 13: Multiply by 3 and add 10 times original number. Multiply by 14: Multiply by 7 and then multiply by 2 Multiply by 15: Multiply by 10 and add 5 times the original number, as above. Multiply by 16: You can double four times, if you want to. Or you can multiply by 8 and then by 2. Multiply by 17: Multiply by 7 and add 10 times original number. Multiply by 18: Multiply by 20 and subtract twice the original number (which is obvious from the first step). Multiply by 19: Multiply by 20 and subtract the original number. Multiply by 24: Multiply by 8 and then multiply by 3. Multiply by 27: Multiply by 30 and subtract 3 times the original number (which is obvious from the first step). Multiply by 45: Multiply by 50 and subtract 5 times the original number (which is obvious from the first step). Multiply by 90: Multiply by 9 (as above) and put a zero on the right. Multiply by 98: Multiply by 100 and subtract twice the original number. Multiply by 99: Multiply by 100 and subtract the original number. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 2:21 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Thursday, 18 October 2007

![]() i love to take photographs.. photographs are history, history bring back memories.. be it good or bad, its part and parcel of your life.. i'd gone to many places again only to find that it had changed.. suddenly, the place become so new to me.. and i never even take a picture of it earlier.. one of them is amk central, another is the old merlion, changi beach, ubin, tanjong rhu, kallang riverside etc.. the oldest photograph i'd ever seen is my great grandparent which i think taken in 1930s.. the old photograph can also considered as an antique, juz that its only of value to my family.. i also keep some old stuff like old dollars notes, old coins and stamps.. grandpa had the same hobby as me.. he had some very old s'pore notes that was used during the british colony before japanese occupation.. before he passed away, he told grandma that these notes should never be sold and to be passed down to us.. the oldest thing i have are only stamps during the japanese occupation.. 50 years later, i'll also follow grandpa and pass it down to my grand children.. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 9:03 am <-------------------------------------------------------> Friday, 12 October 2007

we're on the top of the tower enjoying the scenery, the winds and the sunshine as guoxiong took out his suntan lotion.. we saw some birds but they are too far to capture even on my 10x zoom camera.. we stay up there till the winds subsided and went down for the broadwalk.. there's actually not much to see as its on the medium tide.. beside the usual mud skippers, we only saw frog and lots of seaweed.. i was still wondering whether we could see a crocodile.. haha.. the rock which we took photograph during our last visit is no longer there.. so is the old well where wx used to play sedako.. ;) next we went to the visitor centre.. it is an old cottage built in the 1930s and then later restored into a visitor centre in Dec 2006.. an interesting feature of the cottage is the fireplace.. i think its the only one in s'pore.. there's also a new jetty in front of the cottage but is not in use.. guess its for emergency use.. there's no logic for boats to stop so near to a preserved area.. oh another new thing worth mentioning is the Ketam Mountain Bike Park.. altough its still building in progress, the "Dirt Skill Track" is really fun! but one need to have very good balancing skills and courage to handle the track especially the middle one which is the most challenging! in the end, both of them could only take on the easier one.. haha.. after the exciting dirt track, we went up to ubin summit again.. 60 meters above sea level is another view you should never had missed! while scouting for track up the summit, i saw a huge spider at least the size of my palm which had its web blocking entirely on my path! i managed to clear part of her web without alarming her and sneak through it.. on the summit, guoxiong and i climbed up a huge rock for a better view, but what i saw was so disappointing.. the floras had grown so fast that its no longer the same as what we'd seen more then 3 years ago.. it had block the ubin view, the dam, the kampong hut which we stopped by for coconuts, even the view of s'pore is partially obstructed.. changi airport is no longer in view.. nevertheless, the quarry scenery is still as terrific! before we left, we had our dinner at one of the restaurant beside the sea.. the food was average but cooking style is quite unique.. kampong style food is still quite different from the mainland.. although quite tired, i had an enjoyable day.. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 11:24 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Friday, 5 October 2007 as usual having my night jogging juz now and i suddenly saw two young human walking onto the jogging track.. haha.. ya i can't figured the twins are boy or girl cos it quite dark in the park.. judging by their body frame, they look like two young girls but the hair really look boyish.. anyway, there's a bench in the middle of the park where the lamppost had been faulty for quite some time.. sometimes, i'll find young indian couples on that bench and they'll wear black.. so can you imagine if they didn't smile and show their teeth, their camouflaguing skills are much much better then SAF.. as i jogged toward that "dark and hot" spot, there i saw the two young human on the bench.. ok i guess they are girls.. and its quite dangerous for the two teens to wander in the park late in the night, especially this cheng san park.. one side is the CTE, one side is a large empty carpark where after the empty carpark is a large empty field, another side is a deep slope down where below is the main road.. only the last side of the park are HDB flats.. even though they're lesbian doesn't mean they won't be a target of those men that occasionally sleep in the park.. ![]() i actually very interested in this but can't find enough friends.. fx had gone to japan for his honey moon.. anyway, even if we signed up, we may not win anything too.. not to brag or belittle my friends, i do not have friend who is fast or at least faster then me.. 0 comments ![]() ![]() dreamed of racing on 11:15 pm <-------------------------------------------------------> Monday, 1 October 2007 Joke of The Month Doctor: your husband needs rest and peace.
