Why be grouchy when you can be neutral?
Why be neutral when you can be friendly?

The meditation center where I teach is in the hills of the West Virginia countryside.
When we first opened our center, there was a man down the road who was very
unfriendly. I encountered him regularly on the long walk I take every day.
It is a quiet forest road with little traffic and I always wave at everyone who goes by.
Whenever I saw this man, I would wave to him. He would just frown at me and
look away. Even so, I would always wave and think kindly of him, sending him loving-
friendliness (Metta). I was not disappointed by his attitude. I never gave up on him.
Whenever I saw him, I waved just as I did with other people. After about a year,
his behavior changed. He stopped frowning. I felt wonderful. The practice of loving-
friendliness was bearing fruit.

After another year, when I passed him on my walk, something miraculous happened.
He drove pass me and lifted one finger off the steering wheel. Again, I thought,
"Oh, this is wonderful. Loving-friendliness is working." Another year passed.
Day after day, when I took my walk, I would wave to him and wish him well. The
third year, he lifted two fingers in my direction. Then the next year, he lifted all four
fingers off the wheel. More time passed. One day I was walking down the road as he
turned into his driveway. He took his hand off the steering wheel, stuck it out the
window, and waved at me.

One day, not long after, I saw him parked on the side of the forest roads. He was
sitting in the driver’s seat smoking a cigarette. I went over to him and started talking.
First we chatted just about the weather and then, little by little, his story unfolded.
It turns out that he had been in a terrible accident. A tree had fallen on his truck.
Almost every bone in his body was broken. He has been in a coma. When I first
started seeing him on the road, he was only beginning to recover. He did not refrain
from waving because he was a mean person. He did not wave because he could not
move all his fingers. Had I given up on him, I would never have known how good
this man is.

轮回

中国民间流传人在投胎前喝了“孟婆汤”，就会忘掉过去。哲人柏拉图认为
灵魂投胎前饮用“莫愁河”的清凉河水，就会对过去遗忘殆尽。罗马人则相信
人在投胎时所经过的河叫做“奈思河”，喝了此河的水，对前生的事再也记忆不起。

宗教都承认轮回的存在：道教主张长生不老；基督教、天主教认为人生的目标
在于进入天堂和上帝同在，获得永生；一般的民间信仰也渴求人生不死；
佛教认为人生终极的目的，在于证得无生的境界，也就是解脱轮回、不受后有
的境界。

人既然无法知道有过去、未来，在现实生活中如何得之轮回的确实不讹呢？

蚕结茧成蛹，蛹破茧成蛾，蚕、蛹、蛾三而一，一而三。

“你怎么可以偷摘我的桃子呢？”

“我没有偷你的桃子呀！”

“桃子是我种的，你明明在吃，怎么还想狡辩？”

“你的桃子是种在地下的种子，而我吃的桃子是长在树上的果实，和你有什么相干？”

偷桃人与主人的一番辩驳，孰是孰非不妄加定论，但这车轱辘话里藏着什么呢？
桃子是地下的桃子长成的，彼此具有轮回的关系。

这不就是活生生可以眼见的生命轮回么？！

轮回，并不是一个信仰体系与理论；轮回，更不是用来逃避人生冷酷无情的最后
裁判──死亡的心理安慰。轮回，是一门解释我们前世与来生的精确科学。

相信人世有轮回，并不是佛教要我们如此去相信。当我们对轮回有正确的认识，
才能对过去与未来做一番的回顾与前瞻。愚昧有情众生不能相信轮回的至深道理，
无怪乎古人慨叹：“非经不能陈此事，非佛不能道此言。”

爱情本来就是不长久的。能长久的是比爱情更为深厚真挚的感情。
爱情再升华就成了亲情。到那个时候，你就会觉得你不能没有他，不能不依赖他。

爱情之所以是千古传唱，永恒的主题，就因为它太美丽，又太脆弱。
其实真正维系两个相爱的人之间美好的关系，是比爱情更为深厚的感情。
但这种感情决不是跟爱情割裂开的，而是植根于爱情的，更深于爱情的。
一个人哪能一直都维持激情和热情，那不是都要把人累死了吗。
只有那深于爱情的感情才能使两个人的心不断重燃爱火。

之前展开了一段恋情。只因一个善意的谎言，被误会。本来想告知真相，
但后来觉得没这需要了。她会变得如此我想也是因我而造成的。
曾今还以为这是我最后的一段感情，真可笑。

human has a very bad habit.. that is making assumption.. and once we assumed
something, most of the time it'll lead to misunderstanding.. cos the info we
get may only be a small part of the truth..

i guess the main reason we like to make assumption is we have a tendency to
link up what we have encounter to our past experiences.. in another word,
most of us are "kay kiang" or "think we are smart" and assume that "oh, it
must be this way".. where actual fact, things are not always what it seems
to be..

definition of the word "assume"
Verb: assume
1. Take to be the case or to be true; accept without verification or proof

when i read on the definition, i can't help but find that it is very stupid
to assume something.. but i bet all of us will continue to make an ass out of
u and me.. haha.. been trying hard to kick this habit..

男人健忘好

很多人都说女人记仇。就连我的女性朋友们也都这么认为。同时，大多数朋友也觉得男人
一般上比较宽宏大量、不计较。我相信这其实和男女的记忆力有关。

最近因为开始筹备婚事，所以忙得昏头转向。日间的工作已经是够忙的了，公司里的事
将我的脑袋塞满，要不是未婚妻提醒，许多该做的筹备工作大概都不会去进行。
感谢上天给我这样的贤内助，叫健忘的我不至于忽略分内的事。

医学研究已证实女性的记忆力和语言能力一般上都比男性来的强。我想正因为如此，
她们擅长记人记事。你要她们不记得，那反而有些困难，因为那是违背她们的天性。

所以女人总是觉得很烦，因为她们总是无法忘怀。无论是短时间内或很久以后的遗忘，
都是困难的。难怪中国宋代女词人李清照要说“才下眉头，又上心头”。

一般男人都有语言上的障碍，所以记忆力差情有可原。当你无法将事情“语言化”，
要记得就更困难了。

再者，男人不能一心二用。当他专注做一件事情的时候，处理语言和反应的能力立刻
大减，甚至完全消失。所以他在工作或者在看足球赛转播时，你叫他，他往往都不应你。
他不是故意不理睬，而是他脑子不好，无法分神。

也因为如此，要男人原谅一个人的错，就容易多了。过了一段时日，有新的事物出现时，
他就全神贯注于新发展了。当他说不记得你的错时，他可能是真的忘记了，而不是故作
洒脱在装酷。

所以女士们，千万不要埋怨男士们的健忘；因为我们的健忘，是人类的福气。
